명나라 진계유陳繼愈(1558~1639)의 ⌜안득장자연安得長者言⌟의 한 대목.

고요히 앉아 본 뒤에야 보통 때의 기운이 들떴음을 알았다.

침묵을 지키고 나니 지난날의 언어가 조급했음을 알았다.

일을 줄이자 평소에 시간을 허비했음을 알았다.

문을 닫아걸고 나서 일의 사귐이 지나쳤음을 알았다.

욕심을 줄인 뒤에 평소 병통이 많았던 줄을 알았다.

정을 쏟은 후에야 평상시 마음 씀이 각박했음을 알았다.

靜坐然後知平日之氣浮. 守黙然後知平日之言躁

省事然後之平日之費閑. 閉戶然後知平日之交濫

寡慾然後知平日之病多. 近情然後知平日之念刻

마음의 평화는 어디서 오는가? 말이 떨어지게 무섭게 건너오는 경박한 대꾸는 피곤하다.

할 일 안 할 일 가리지 않고 욕심 사납게 그러쥐는 탐욕은 사람을 지치게 한다.

엉덩이를 가만 붙이지 못하고 여기 저기 기웃대는 오지랖.

나없으면 금세 큰일이라도 날 줄 아는 자만.

이런 것들 때문에 삶의 속도는 자꾸만 빨라지고, 일상은 날로 복잡 해 진다.

마음은 어느새 저만치 달아나 돌아올 줄 모른다. 마음을 놓친 삶은 허깨비 인생이다.

차분히 가라앉혀, 한 마디라도 더 줄인다.

일을 조금 덜어 내고, 외부로 향한 시선을 안으로 거둔다.

욕심을 덜어, 따뜻한 마음을 나눈다. 그제야 삶이 조금 편안해진다. 눈빛이 맑아지고 귀가 밝아진다.

마음속에 고이는 것이 있다.

고려 때 혜심慧諶 스님(1178~1234)이 눈 온 날 아침 대중들을 모아 놓고 법단에 올랐다.

주장자를 한번 내려치더니, 낭랑하게 시 한 수를 읊었다.

대지는 은세계로 변하여 버려

온몸이 수정궁에 살고 있는 듯,

화서華胥의 꿈 뉘 능히 길이 잠기리

대숲엔 바람 불고 해는 중천에.

大地變成銀世界渾身住在水精宮

誰能久作華費夢風撼珢玕日已中

시의 제목이 ⌜눈 온 뒤 대중에게 보이다(因雪示衆)⌟이다.

그는 무엇을 대중들에게 보여 주고 싶었던 걸까?

밤사이 온 세상이 은세계로 변했다. 수정 궁궐이 따로 없다. 어제까지 찌든 삶이 눈떠 보니 달라졌다.

하지만 달콤한 꿈은 깨게 마련이다. 내린 눈은 금세 녹는다. 바람은 대숲을 흔들어 쌓인 눈을 털고,

해님은 중천에 높이 솟았다. 대중들아! 이제 꿈에서 깨나라.

전미개오轉迷開悟! 미망迷妄을 돌려 깨달음을 얻자.

눈은 다시 녹아도 어제의 나는 내가 아니다. 새 눈 새 마음으로 새 세상을 맞이하자.
